Amaryllis

$38.00

Add a living, joyful note to your holiday décor with the color and natural beauty of a red-flowering Amaryllis (botanically known as Hippeastrum). Your Amaryllis grows from a bulb which we’ve coated in layer of protective wax. It doesn’t require water or fertilizer to show off its splendid and festive flowers. Flowers typically begin to open about three to six weeks after you receive the bulb, depending on factors like light and temperature. No matter where you put it, make sure it’s where you can enjoy the flowers up close. This exceptional houseplant will be delivered fresh from our farm direct to your doorstep. Shipping, handling, and a heat pack (if needed) is included in the price.

  • Blooms last two to three weeks, depending on the conditions
  • Perfect gift as no water or maintenance is needed to enjoy the flowers
  • Beautiful holiday décor for mantles, tabletops, and other surfaces

Keep your Amaryllis happy by giving it lots of light. It looks best within 3 to 4 feet of an east- or west-facing window but tolerates lower light levels.

Plant Bio

Hippeastrum spp.

Amaryllis is a tried-and-true holiday favorite from South America that’s been hybridized for a couple of hundred years, offering gardeners a wide range of varieties that come in many colors, sizes, and flower forms. We’re offering hybrids with large, single red flowers for their holiday appeal.

Your Amaryllis is able to pull stored moisture and nutrients from its bulb, so if you wish to enjoy it for the holidays and be done (as most people do with their Poinsettias), you can simply compost the bulb after the flowers have faded. If you wish to keep the bulb from year to year and enjoy more flowers next winter, remove the wax coating, pot the bulb about halfway deep in a potting mix labeled for use on houseplants, and keep it in warm, bright place.

Water as the top half or so of the potting mix dries to the touch, taking care not to overwater. The sooner you remove the wax, the better chance your bulb has to continue to grow.

To encourage it to bloom next year, stop watering it next fall and store the bulb someplace cool (between about 40 and 60F) for eight to 10 weeks. Buds should start to develop during this time.

Note: This plant may have some natural degree of toxicity and may cause discomfort or illness if ingested. Additionally, exposure to the sap of this plant may cause discomfort to individuals with a sensitivity to it upon contact. Grown for ornamental purposes and not intended for human or animal consumption.
